| Customer Reviews: A wonderful little netbook. December 28, 2009 John Nunn (Coventry, U.K.) 45 out of 47 found this review helpful
I have been very cautious of getting a netbook as they don't really have the power of a good laptop; however I found myself needing a small portable machine for working on documents and web browsing on the move, as well as giving presentations. After looking at several makes and models I chose the Acer One 531 because the keyboard layout was not too small and the screen was nice and clear. The Atom N270 processor also helps make this unit very responsive and quite usable.
The additional software included by Acer was not an issue as I repaved the machine with a clean install of Windows 7 home premium. The drivers were easily downloadable from Acers website. I also upgraded the memory to 2GB, this is very simple to do and is defiantly worthwhile as it significantly improves the performance of the machine.
The battery life is great perhaps giving about 5 1/2 hours of continuous use, which is more than acceptable for a machine of this type. Additional batteries are available for a very small amount. The built-in web cam is not the greatest in the world however it does work very well in low light conditions. The unit does include wireless networking however this is only 802.11b and g so if your router is set to use either n or a then you will need to rely on a USB wireless adaptor. It is a shame Bluetooth was not included but as with most small form factor devices sacrifices need to be made.
Whilst the device does not have an optical drive it can always use an external USB drive like the superb Samsung External DRD-RW (Samsung SE-S084C/RSBN USB 2.0 8x DVD Writer External Optical Drive for PC, Netbook and Mac - Piano Black). There is also a memory card reader that supports Supporting Secure Digital(tm) (SD) Card, MultiMediaCard (MMC), Reduced-Size Multimedia Card (RS-MMC), Memory Stick(tm) (MS), Memory Stick PRO(tm) (MS PRO), xD-Picture Card(tm) (xD) memory cards. In addition there is also an expansion slot that takes Secure Digital cards to expand internal storage.

This is a very useful and satisfying piece of equipment. The reflective screen takes a little getting used to but overall the handiness of being able to keep in touch with e-mails and send pictures to relatives with such a small machine makes this a very useful item for a traveller.

It is compact as you would expect, but the clarity is excellent, I have used it with power and with battery and it works well either way. I have had no problems so far.
